Club president Eddie McGuire's exit amid a controversial report on systemic racism at Collingwood. Adam Treloar's messy transfer to Western Bulldogs amid salary-cap slashing. The Magpies have endured a horror off-season.

On the field, the Magpies will need another big year from their inspirational skipper Scott Pendlebury, whose stabilising leadership will be critical.

Treloar, Jaidyn Stephenson and Tom Phillips are gone after a cleanout of the roster. It will be fascinating to see how the Magpies' draft crop perform in light of their salary cap issues.

The Pies will need to dramatically improve their attack. Last year they ranked a poor 16th at generating a score once they pierced the inside 50 arc.

Collingwood Magpies history

The Collingwood Magpies are one of the most beloved sports clubs in Australia, regularly smashing attendance and ratings records. Founded in 1892, they've since played in an impressive 44 VFL/AFL grand finals.

They have endured a bit of a rollercoaster ride over the past decade or so. Since winning the 2010 flag, their fortunes have been decidedly mixed. Some feel the jury remains out over coach Buckley, who is still yet to taste his first premiership as a player or coach.
