Alex Hourigan
Hey chicks, I'm Al.
Sally McMullen
And I'm Sal.
Alex Hourigan
And this is Two Broke Chicks, the show that shares life lessons for the gals, from the gals and in this episode of Add to Cart, we have Zanna Roberts Rassi, the co-founder of Milk Makeup to talk all things online shopping addictions, makeup products, and all that other shopping fun stuff. You know, you know what the drill is here. We don't need to tell you, you've got it.
Sally McMullen
Exactly! If there was anybody's makeup bag that we want to peek into, it's Zanna's.
Alex Hourigan
And wardrobes!
Sally McMullen
Get me in there.
Alex Hourigan
However, just a red flag for the episode. We did record this in the Milk Makeup office in New York, which did have a little bit of background noise. We were recording remotely, the microphones were having an argument with us. So just, you know, it might be a little bit fuzzy wuzzy but we got there in the end, so just enjoy it. Sit back, relax and shut up.
Sally McMullen
Exactly. It's still a good chat.
Alex Hourigan
Yeah. Well, let's jump into the episode. Thanks, Zanna for joining us. Jumping straight into our Add to Cart questions. It's our favourite question. But in our main episode, you already told us the best selling products from Milk Makeup that everyone needs to get around but what are your three favourite ride or die skincare beauty makeup products that you cannot live without?
Zanna Roberts Rassi
So I would say Matte Bronze Stick, cannot go a day without using that. It's a mini matte bronzer, it contains coconut, avocado, mango oil. So it's almost like this incredibly moisturising tan that makes you look like you're actually tanned as opposed to wearing bronzer. So that will be number one. Rise Mascara, our newest mascara. It's like curling your lashes, and you know when you actually like get a lash perm? It feels like I've had that done when you use it and it doesn't flake or crumble off. So that's super nourishing, as well as lifting. And then I would say Hydro Grip Set and Refresh, you mentioned it before. I run around all day and invariably from the beginning of the day to the end of the day, I don't have time to go and do a full look again. I spray it on actually when I'm applying my makeup in the morning in layers, so I'll do like the base and then spray, and the concealer or whatever, and then spray. And then just take the mini version of this in my bag around with me all day and just spritz on occasionally. It's also super hydrating, use it on a plane. Doesn't contain alcohol so it doesn't dry out your skin. I use it on the red carpet all the time. Freshen your look uo in a second.
Sally McMullen
Yes and also give you a bit of a wake up too.
Zanna Roberts Rassi
Oh yeah. The trick to applying any spritz like that is don't just put it in front of your face like that, do the circle.
Sally McMullen
Love that. Hot tip.
Zanna Roberts Rassi
And the third one would be, I'm a big blush fan at the moment. We talked about our lip and cheek blushes but we also have this incredible bionic family that comes in all these fabulous little shades and they are infused with really great skincare benefits as well. So they almost plump up your skin as well as giving you that great flush. And right now I'm obsessed with all the different blush techniques. You can have monochromatic, you can have flush blush, under layering, over layering, front blush was something I read about recently, the sun blush over here or you could make that look better. There's so many different ways of applying it that I think none of us ever really thought about. So, play time with these.
Sally McMullen
Okay, moving on to fashion. What is the item in your wardrobe that is your absolute go to and you can never see yourself throwing away?
Zanna Roberts Rassi
You know what? It would be a Burberry leather jacket that I've had for 15 years. I wore it the other day, it came back out, dusty as all. Still so rock and roll, still like just the right amount of hardware on it, soft now after years of wearing. It's one of those if I lost it, I would be so gutted. So Burberry Motor Jacket.
Yeah, you can never go wrong with a good leather jacket. Especially in a motorcycle car.
Alex Hourigan
Yeah.
Sally McMullen
Never goes out of fashion.
Alex Hourigan
But our favourite question that we ever ask people is what is the worst or stupidest thing you've ever bought?
Zanna Roberts Rassi
Three of the same thing before.
Alex Hourigan
Oh my gosh.
Zanna Roberts Rassi
Not even drunk, just one of those multiplied and put too many of the same thing in my cart.
Sally McMullen
I've done that.
Alex Hourigan
I think we've all done that.
Zanna Roberts Rassi
What would yours be? I'm interested.
Alex Hourigan
One I bought like a miniature couch like I bought.
Zanna Roberts Rassi
Stop it!
Alex Hourigan
It was like supposed to be for three people like a giant couch from my apartment and it was like a three seater and it came and it was literally for a children's room. And like my roommate and I like went to go and build this couch, we were looking at the size of these cushions and neither of us said anything. Like we both knew this was not going to end well. And we just finished and we looked at it and she was like, "You're an idiot". Everyone that came over for a bit just walked in they'd look at this couch and they're like, "That is a tiny couch". And I was like, "I know!".
Sally McMullen
It was like a Barbie couch.
Alex Hourigan
It was ridiculous. She was cute. It was horrible.
Zanna Roberts Rassi
You know what's funny, actually when you say it now I might have to rewind and change my question, my answer. The amount of furniture I've bought for our house that is disproportionately fit. It doesn't fit like the rug is tiny, the sofa is too small, the chairs are dwarf size, table is massive. I don't know what is wrong with me it's like the heights wrong or sites, I have no scale.
Alex Hourigan
I know, neither!
Sally McMullen
I have to be there in person and even then I'm like
Alex Hourigan
People are like, "Why don't you measure it?",and I'm like, "Because I'm lazy!"
Zanna Roberts Rassi
It's too big of a decision like putting on all this money to furniture and then we're buying the wrong size and it's a nightmare to get returned.
Alex Hourigan
Yeah.
Sally McMullen
Oh my god, yeah.
Zanna Roberts Rassi
Big.
Alex Hourigan
Yeah.
Sally McMullen
Yeah, exactly.
Zanna Roberts Rassi
So furniture.
Sally McMullen
We've all been there.
Alex Hourigan
We've all been there.
Sally McMullen
Okay, what are your favourite brands to shop with and why?
Zanna Roberts Rassi
Frankie Shop. Frankie Shop I'm obsessed with, I don't have you guys have been. It's here in New York, it's like this little gem of a store, is also in Paris but they sell the coolest oversized easy tailoring. Follow them on Instagram if you're not already, everything's just cool as and the best fits, really reasonably priced. Like men's wear pants, great blazers, cool dresses, great shoes. The edit is just phenomenal. If you want to do that cool girl like downtown Manhattan vibe mixed with a bit of French, that's the one.
Sally McMullen
That's what we're trying to go for.
Alex Hourigan
I've been trying to do that for years!
Zanna Roberts Rassi
And then Pangaia, which I was telling actually earlier, this so this pink blazer I'm wearing is them but they started kind of popped during COVID and they produce sweat suits in every colour. And they're science based, very natural fabrics and they make fabrics out of the most incredible natural substances are super sustainable. And they just got into tailoring now so I'm into like this blazer.
Alex Hourigan
Looking fabulous.
Sally McMullen
It's so beautiful.
Alex Hourigan
I love like an oversized moment.
Zanna Roberts Rassi
Love. I feel like myself I've got something big.
Alex Hourigan
Yeah.
Zanna Roberts Rassi
Even if it's my shoe. If I have like a skinny dress on, I want like a chunky shoe.
Alex Hourigan
Yeah
Zanna Roberts Rassi
I need something bigger.
Alex Hourigan
Yeah. So last but not least, what is your savvy shopping tip?
Zanna Roberts Rassi
Shop early in the season, like do a little mood board for yourself. And it sounds like work but if you can say at the beginning of, like say it's fall is coming up now, right? Like put together like some ideas of what you want your wardrobe to look like. Who you want to be. I think always take a reference from like a celebrity or someone whose style you like and put that together visually. And then you can really figure out the pieces, the holes that you've got, because invariably you don't need those pieces. You probably got them somewhere in your closet but you decide you want to like emulate Katharine Hepburn this season like oh, I need the wide leg, high waist pant or I need a belt so I can make those other pants work like that, like that would be definitely. And a tailor's your secret weapon. You can buy the cheapest clothes in the world and get a good tailor and makes them look a million dollars.
Alex Hourigan
I need to get into doing that.
Sally McMullen
Me too, as two short girlies
Alex Hourigan
Yeah!
Sally McMullen
Like we need to.
Zanna Roberts Rassi
It's great for all those late night shopping mistakes.
Alex Hourigan
