Hey chicks, I'm Sal.
Alex Hourigan
And I'm Al.
Sally McMullen
And this is Add to Cart, our very special mini episode where we grill our guests on their fashion essentials, beauty bag must-haves, shopping regrets, all the fun stuff. And today we are joined by Emma Edwards aka The Broke Generation to chat all about it. Jumping straight into our quickfire Add to Cart questions, what are the three products in your makeup bag that you cannot live without and why?
Emma Edwards
The Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta pads. They're technically skincare but I don't use a whole lot of interesting makeup, so I'm going to go with those, in the extra strength because I have, like, leather skin.
Alex Hourigan
Mood.
Emma Edwards
Naked Sundays or Ultra Violette SPF.
Alex Hourigan
Love both of them.
Emma Edwards
And the NARS Velvet Matte lip pencils in a tangerine orange. I'm not sure what the actual shade is but they're really hard to find. But when you get them in stock, buy them all because they're gorgeous.
Alex Hourigan
They're all really good ones.
Sally McMullen
Good recs.
Alex Hourigan
What is the item in your wardrobe that is like your go-to staple item or just something that you can never see yourself getting rid of.
Emma Edwards
I have this zebra print shirt, I got it on sale at NET-A-PORTER. Brand I've never heard of and it was meant to go for, like, 400 bucks, but I think I paid like $100 because it was like that real asshole end of the sale. Like, hardly anything there. I just love it. It's just, like, it's my staple.
Alex Hourigan
We love a little bit of zebra print.
Sally McMullen
Absolutely. Animal print is a neutral in our book.
Alex Hourigan
Oh, fully.
Sally McMullen
Okay, what is the worst, or stupidest, or funniest thing that you ever bought online?
Emma Edwards
It's not so much what I bought, it's the process of obtaining the item. So,
Sally McMullen
Here we go.
Emma Edwards
I purchased something online from Love Honey. Sex toys are really expensive.
Alex Hourigan
Yeah, they are.
Emma Edwards
Like, what's that about? So it was a very, it was like the,
Sally McMullen
The patriarchy is at it again!
Emma Edwards
Seriously, it was the sort of like, what shall I say, it was like the Woolworths essentials of vibrators, but sometimes you just need something basic. Anyway, so I ordered it online. And because I had just got a P.O box for my business. I thought, I'll get it sent there. Because I might not be home. I don't want it to go to the regular post office. Like, at least I can go and get it from my P.O box. So I went to get it from my P.O box and the guy that was giving me the parcel, like I see him all the time, obviously. And I went in it was like your P.O box has mail. I was like, "Sweet!".
Alex Hourigan
You're like, "This is gonna be a good day for me".
Emma Edwards
Yeah, great Wednesday afternoon for me. So I go there and I, like, put my hand, like I didn't notice with the P.O boxes, you put your hand in to get the little slip to go and get your parcel. And like on the other side, it's just like, a wall of, like, P.O boxes, and they just put the things in. So he had like, seen my little mitties in there looking for my slips to pick up my parcel from LH trading. So anyway, the discrete packaging was somewhat of a failure, because he goes, "Oh, Emma, Emma, Emma, there's a parcel for you". And I was like, "Good. I was hoping there was". And he was like, "Here you go", and he hands me this box that's like *vibrating sound*.
Alex Hourigan
Oh! You're lying!
Emma Edwards
No, I swear. 100%, I swear. And it's that, you know, when you know, when you know, the guy at the post office, like you go there a lot to pick up parcels. He just, like, handed it to me and I was just like, "Oh f*ck". And there was a queue of people behind me and I was like, do I say it's a cat toy?
Alex Hourigan
Old Nokia phone, you know?
Sally McMullen
Yeah, get a new P.O box.
Emma Edwards
Yeah, I'm gonna have to move.
Sally McMullen
It's the only solution.
Alex Hourigan
What did he say? Did he say anything or was it just like, we're both not going to acknowledge what's happening right now.
Emma Edwards
Well, the thing that was weird is that he had put it aside, he put it aside for me, rather than sending it through the usual parcel system, because it was obviously moving. Like, it was probably like,
Alex Hourigan
You're like, "Why, why is the tape open?". You're like, "Why is my package open?".
Emma Edwards
So I just took it, looked confused for a moment, winked at him and left.
Alex Hourigan
You little minx.
Emma Edwards
I was like, I can either lie and everyone's gonna know or I can just go with it. And I was like,
Alex Hourigan
Got a live this afternoon guys, sorry.
Sally McMullen
Oh, my God. I love that. Own it baby.
Alex Hourigan
Yeah!
Emma Edwards
And then I came home and started packing up my house.
Alex Hourigan
And that is now why Emma lives in Antarctica. You hear so many times, like, people making the joke about that happening but I've never actually met anyone that happened to so thank you for being the highlight of my day today, Emma. So we already know you love Love Honey. But, just kidding, but what are your favourite brands to shop with and why?
Emma Edwards
This was a hard one because I don't feel like I really have fave brands. I tend to look for fabrics, there's this fabric called cupro. I don't know if you've ever felt it, it's similar to tencel, a little bit viscose-y, but almost a bit more brushed. And I just, I basically when I have something I really like, like this zebra shirt, for example, or if there's something that I do really like especially on, like, a curvier body, certain fabrics are a bit more flattering for me. And some just are not, even though all the Instagram girlies look amazing in it, I'm just, like, I look like someone's dad. So I tend to look for fabrics, but I do, like, some of the ones I like are the tencel, or the cupro, or the sometimes viscose, which I know is probably problematic environmentally, but it's not quite polyester. I like to look for silks and things like that, particularly if I'm thrifting, if you like get to know what it feels like going through those. So I kind of look for fabrics more than brands, but I do love me a SABA sale, because their stuff is bonkers priced, but in the sale, it's actually really affordable. But again, I do tend to favour fabrics, because even the best brands now, if they're even really are any, but even higher quality brands, the quality is so inconsistent and the sizing is so inconsistent. So yeah, that's my tip, look for fabrics and certain cuts, rather than specific brands.
Alex Hourigan
Yeah, I love that. That's a really good tip. Because, as well, we have like a format on Instagram where we pull in different brand's, like, sustainability scores. And you would be shocked by some of these scores, like Sir the Label and, it's Reformation isn't it? They both have really low.
Sally McMullen
Yeah, or Realisation Par.
Alex Hourigan
Realisation Par. That's it. Sorry, not Reformation. They both have really low scores, and everyone in the comments was like, "Whoa", and we're like, "Yeah".
Sally McMullen
Yeah, for the money that you're spending, just doesn't add up. Okay, last but not least, what's your number one savvy shopping tip? Hit me!
Emma Edwards
It's going to be to, when you see something that you want, don't just get it, put some steps in place to check that you're getting the best price, if there aren't discounts, because you know, so many things are stocked elsewhere now. Like, The Iconic stocks every single brand and David Jones even has a lot. Google the style first and see if there's a different price elsewhere. Check Facebook Marketplace and Depop in case, someone's selling it basically brand new.
Alex Hourigan
I love Facebook Marketplace!
Emma Edwards
Check Honey, and not Love Honey, regular Honey, and ShopBack, and Cashrewards and all that kind of stuff.
Alex Hourigan
And finder.com.au, you know.
Sally McMullen
Cheeky plug.
Emma Edwards
Check you're getting the best price, the best discount, whatever, make sure you can return it if you're not sure. And also give yourself that time to decide if you really want it. If you're not 100% certain, add it to, like, a wishlist, check it back in a week or so and see if you are still wanting it. It's also helpful if you're waiting for a discount, like add it and then, you know, wait for it. Say, 'Oh, I'll wait for a discount', and then if you still want it when the discount comes up, then you, you really know.
Sally McMullen

Sally McMullen
Literally, anything that's gonna automate the process and do the hard work for me.
Alex Hourigan
