If your business posts employees overseas, it’s important to ensure that your employees are able to receive the medical cover they need anywhere in the world.

ACE Expatriate Travel Insurance is a business insurance solution for employees seconded outside of their home country. It covers the cost of overseas medical expenses and repatriation when your employees suffer illness or injury while overseas, while it also ensures that your employees can access 24/7 emergency assistance. Other benefits include maternity cover and cover for the cost of ancillary benefits such as optical and dental.

Expatriate Travel Insurance is offered by ACE Group, one of the largest property and casualty insurers in the world. ACE operates in 54 countries and in 2014 boasted more than $98 billion in assets and almost $23 billion of gross written premiums. does not currently have access to this travel insurance brand. What does this policy cover?

  • Medical primary care and specialist outpatient care. You're covered for in-hospital medical charges for both inpatient and same-day surgery. Other medical expenses such as doctor and specialist charges are covered as well. If you're prescribed medicines they are covered while you're in hospital.
  • Medical and emergency evacuation. If injury or sickness means you require specialised treatment, surgery or postoperative attention which is unobtainable in the country you're in, cover is provided for the resulting medical or emergency evacuation costs.
  • Maternity expenses. This benefit provides $10,000 of cover for maternity care and treatment expenses including prenatal, delivery and postnatal charges (up to six months after the birth of the baby). Additional cover is also available for emergency or complicated deliveries, while $10,000 of newborn child cover (up to the age of six months) is included as well.
  • Dental expenses. Cover is provided for general dental expenses such as examinations, scaling, cleaning, fillings, x-rays, tooth extraction and diagnostic services. Special dental expenses are also covered, including root treatment, endodontic treatment, oral surgery, anaesthetic services, periodontal surgery, new dentures, repairs to crowns and bridges, and specialist orthodontic services.
  • Ancillary expenses. ACE Expatriate Travel Insurance provides cover for the following extras treatments: optical, physio, podiatry, prescribed medicines, prosthesis and hearing aids, speech therapy, acupuncture, naturopathy, hypnotherapist, chiropractic, osteopathy and dietitian.
  • Other expenses. Up to $10,000 of cover is provided for rehabilitation and occupational therapy expenses, while psychology and psychiatry expenses are covered up to $2,500.
  • Home nursing expenses. This benefit provides up to four weeks of cover for home nursing expenses required by an employee following a sickness or injury.

What isn’t covered?

ACE Expatriate Travel Insurance claims will not be paid if it arises due to:

  • Routine physical examinations or cosmetic, elective or plastic surgery (except as required to cure or alleviate an injury)
  • A pre-existing medical condition on the first 12 months after cover starts
  • Any treatments or services that can be covered by Medicare or by compensation under other schemes, for example workers’ compensation or transport accident laws
  • Incidental hospital expenses that are not medically necessary such as phone calls, TV rentals and newspapers
  • A complication with infection with HIV or AIDS
  • Sexually transmitted disease, abortion, infertility or sterilisation (unless medically necessary)
  • Suicide or intentional self-inflicted injury
  • Any illegal or criminal act committed by you or an insured person
  • You being under the influence of alcohol or drugs (except those being used as prescribed by a doctor)
  • Any consequence of war, or from an insured person participating in a riot or civil commotion
  • You or the insured person refusing to follow the instructions of the insurer or ACE Assistance
  • Air travel except as a passenger in a properly licensed aircraft
  • The insured person travelling against the advice of a doctor or specialist
  • The insured person training for or participating in any professional sport
  • An insured person who is over 65 years of age

Additional cover from ACE

ACE Expatriate Travel Insurance also offers the following additional benefits:

  • Emergency return home. This covers reasonable travel and accommodation expenses if you need to return to your country of residence because of the unexpected death of your spouse/partner or dependent child(ren) or if they become seriously ill.
  • Repatriation of mortal remains. This benefit covers the cost of returning the your remains to your country of residence or the costs of burial or cremation in the country of your death.
  • Personnel replacement. If you become seriously ill, ACE Expatriate Travel Insurance will cover the travel and temporary accommodation expenses you incur.
  • Home leave. ACE also provides cover for you while you're on home leave.

How do I claim?

In the event of a claim, you or any other person entitled to claim under the policy will need to give notice of your intention to ACE Insurance. This must be done in writing no later than 30 days following the event which causes your claim, but in any case as soon as is reasonably possible.

ACE may require certificates, information and a range of other documentation in order to process your claim and it’s your responsibility to provide anything the insurer requests at your own expense. In some cases, ACE may also reserve the right to have the insured person medically examined.

Q. Is there a cooling-off period?

  • A. Yes, you have 14 days after taking out cover to decide whether this policy meets your insurance needs. If you wish to cancel cover, notify ACE in writing and you will receive a full refund of your premium.

Q. How much cover is provided for dental expenses?

  • A. ACE Expatriate Travel Insurance covers 85 per cent of general dental expenses up to $1,200, and 85 per cent of special dental expenses up to the same limit.

Q. How much optical cover is provided?

  • A. Up to $500 of optical cover is available under this policy.

Q. If an insured person suffers a serious injury or sickness that requires them to be returned to their home country, for how long will their medical expenses be covered?

  • A. ACE will pay medical expenses up to the maximum sum insured on your policy for up to 12 months.
