ABC confirms Doctor Who spin-off Class for iView fast tracking

Alex Kidman 26 September 2016 NEWS

The latest Whoniverse spin-off series is heading to ABC’s iView service, as well as ABC2, direct from the UK.

Issues around content availability have led many disgruntled TV watchers to adopt geododging measures such as VPNs to ensure rapid access to the latest TV shows, but matters are improving. For the series that it’s had the rights to, the ABC has long been pretty solid in offering quick access to new content, especially when it relates to flagship BBC show Doctor Who.

In recent years it has offered same-day terrestrial broadcasts and often iView availability the minute episodes have finished airing in the UK. That has led to some passionate Who fans rising early on Sunday mornings to view episodes of recent series.

Doctor Who has also enjoyed numerous spin-offs over the years, ranging from the very early Peter Cushing cinema films to the somewhat regrettable 1980s one-off K-9 and Company, the intermittently brilliant Torchwood (if you ignore Torchwood: Miracle Day, and frankly, everybody should) and the sadly missed The Sarah Jane Adventures.

The latest announced spin-off show is Class, set in Coal Hill School, where it all started in 1963. The school setting has had a resurgence ever since the 50th anniversary episode and especially when most recent companion Clara Oswald was teaching at the school.

In the UK, Class will air on BBC Three from 22 October. The ABC has announced that Class will also air on iView directly after it finishes airing in the UK on 22 October, with episodes also airing on ABC2 on Monday 24 October with a special double episode. How special? Doctor Who lead actor Peter Capaldi is tipped to appear, which makes it pretty significant, we’d guess.

According to the official synopsis, this is what we can expect from Class when it starts airing in late October:

Class centres on four Coal Hill School students as they face their own fears and navigate a life of friends, parents, school work, sex, sorrow – and possibly the end of existence.
Coal Hill School has been a part of the Doctor Who universe since the very beginning, but that has come at a price. All the time travelling over the years has caused the very walls of space and time to become thin. There’s something pressing in on the other side, something waiting for its chance to kill everyone and everything, to bring us all into Shadow.
Fear is coming, tragedy is coming, war is coming. Prepare yourselves, Class is coming.
