Award winning coffee, golden age films and lush terraces in the heart of Sydney.

For obvious reasons, timeless charm never goes out of style and none is set to become more timeless or more charming than the upcoming Paramount House Hotel in Surry Hills. What this intimate 29-bedroom development might lack in grandeur, it will almost certainly make up for in comfort, style and personality.

Set to open in early 2018, on top of its old Paramount Studios namesake, these hotel designers might have taken their cues from film directors and set designers, with a remarkable attention to detail in every aspect of the venue.

The owners say it's "not just another bedroom for the night," and describe it as a "unique take on Australian hospitality," that "think[s] beyond the tourist market to deliver a rich, layered local experience unlike any other in the city."

In this case, a "layered experience" likely refers to the eye-catching range of unusually blended features sitting amongst the boutique rooms themselves, including:

  • The arthouse Golden Age Cinema & Bar on the ground floor
  • A design-led co-working hub, The Office Space
  • The award winning café Paramount Coffee Project as an integrated lobby extension

With home rental sites like Airbnb surging ahead, and more overseas visitors wanting to stay in destinations rather than hotels, Paramount Studios Hotel might be coming at the right time.

Copper cladding and film storage

Melbourne-based architecture outfit Breathe has been given the go-ahead to outfit the new location, and they certainly have a lot to work with. The new venue straddles two separate (but newly connected) buildings, including the former Paramount Studios headquarters, and the studio's old film storage warehouse, capped off with a two storey copper-clad extension.

The rooms themselves will also embrace the venue's innately blended aesthetics, by working on a foundation of heritage details, and adding contemporary sparks where they work best. The overall palette will also be carefully measured out in subtle hues, with concrete, terrazzo and timber all working together.

To balance the earth, timber and stone hues inside, you can expect to find a lot of planting and greenery, especially on the terrace space of most rooms. The hotel staff might find themselves doubling as gardeners, and odds are they'll look good doing so with bespoke uniforms provided by Worktones, a specialty uniform designer and manufacturer with a penchant for practical wear done in stylish earth tones.

Relax in your room with an olive green novella.

Despite having only 29 rooms, this boutique hotel is still looking like the complete package.

Come for the coffee, stay for the films and then spend the night because you want to see more. Unlike hotels that tout great views of the outside this one is all about finding a dream view indoors.
