The funky and groovy makeup trends of the 70s
These are the most popular beauty trends from the grooviest decade - this is all the inspiration you need!
The 70s were absolutely iconic for statement looks. From natural girl-next-door to hippie and disco queens, the decade embraced trends that really reflected the culture of the time.
Whether you're looking to try a new beauty look or need some inspiration for a costume party, we've gone ahead and covered the top 70s beauty trends for you. Keep scrolling to find out how you can get the look!
1. Top and bottom mascara
The huge false lash craze of the 60s began to fade in the 70s as many women opted for more natural shapes or started to forgo the trend altogether. Instead, mascara was applied to both the top and bottom lashes to give a more natural version of the statement look.

2. Bronzed cheeks
Moving away from the mod makeup of the 60s, the 70s gave way to a more natural idea of beauty. The tanned, golden look became worshipped and bronzer became all the rage. Applied to the cheekbones, chin, jawline and tip of the nose, the trend involved using a hue two shades darker than your natural skin tone and then blending it out to give the desired sun-kissed glow.

3. Sheer lips
Keeping with the natural beauty theme, the 70s were pretty low-key in terms of lip shades. Gloss was in and hues of peach or pink were favoured. Earthy brown lipstick also became popular and was paired with everything from the natural look to the heavier disco makeup that took hold later in the decade.

4. Shimmer shadows
By the mid to late 70s, the disco era had really taken off and with it came a more dramatic makeup look. Shimmer eye shadows in shades of gold, silver or blue were paired with black mascara and eyeliner for a truly groovy, night time look.

5. Hair flowers
The hair flower trend carried on from the late 60s and right into the 70s where it really reached its peak. Associated with the flower power political movement of the time, hair flowers became one of the most iconic looks from history. It's so memorable and popular that you'll still see your fair share of girls rocking this look at a festival here and there.
