Even if you’re not an American ex-pat, you can still join in the celebrations of the 4th of July a.k.a. Independence Day.
Normally in the States, the 4th of July would be marked with a public holiday, fireworks, carnivals, parades, concerts, baseball games, family reunions and more. In Australia, none of that is going to happen. Well, maybe the family reunions.
This shouldn’t stop you from partying with stars, stripes and an Uncle Sam hat, however. In jest, not in jest, whatever. A celebration is a celebration, and if you’re an American ex-pat, or know one, then it’s more than likely that patriotic little thing is going to party like Barack Obama just won the presidency. Again.
You’ve two possibilities here: 1) Throw a 4th of July house party 2) Celebrate the 4th of July in a bar/restaurant that has some affiliation with America (most likely they serve its cuisine, or are owned by a Yank). Figure out whether you’re one or two and see below on how to celebrate this American holiday.
How to throw a 4th of July house party
The date? Already set. The time? Whenever you can knock off work and get your home organised. The company? Whoever’s up for a sugar fix and a piss up. Now all you need is a few party decorations, a costume, and your food.
Costumes and outfits
Whether you’re planning to wear the full stars and stripes in an out-of-this-world costume, or are playing it cool and merely donning the right colours, we’ve got you sorted for your 4th of July party wear.
Food and beer
Food is important, and with the national foods being things like mac ‘n’ cheese, burgers, and hotdogs, we think you’ve got that lot covered. But what about the other party foods? Here ya go:
Which Sydney bars are holding 4th of July celebrations?
As the 4th of July falls on a Monday this year many of the bars hosting celebrations are choosing to make it an early one this year and party away on 2 July instead.
Who's saluting the stars and stripes this year? These bars are:
The Soda Factory, Surry Hills
- Address: 16 Wentworth Ave, Surry Hills
- Phone number: (02) 8096 9120
- Find them on Facebook: The Soda Factory
- Open: 7 July 2016 from 5pm to late
The Soda Factory has always been a big fan of 4th of July celebrations. With good reason too, as it's cuisine is hands-down Americana.
Now, they could play it cool and just serve you their general fare, but you know that's not how this bar likes to celebrate. The bar is making it a big one so is delaying celebrations until Thursday night where live tunes by the Rarara's (including American covers) will be played into the wee hours of the morning. As you throw shapes, you can tuck into the bar's wings of fury chicken wings (buy ten, get ten free) and wash it down with an Abraham Binkdrinkin cocktail or a soda float if that floats your boat better.
Miss Peaches, Newtown
- Address: Level 1, 201 Missenden Rd, Newtown
- Phone number: (02) 9557 7280
- Find them on Facebook: Miss Peaches
- When: 2 July 2016 from 5pm to late
Start your evening with a craft beer from The States. Or why not try out the cocktails crafted especially for the occasion? An Old Glory perhaps? Or Apple Pie Shooters?
Whichever you choose, match it with some good ol' soul food. This year that grand ol' Liberty Burger returns. That's a house ground beef patty, American cheddar, Southern fried chicken, bacon, pickles, onion, tomato and lettuce, served with cheesy fries. It'll really get the heart pumping. Also on the menu will be a patriot dog, candied yam and blackbean burger and freedom chili fries.
Once you’re properly sated, tread the boards to Ross Tipper, Pat Capocci and DJ King OPP into the early morning. Yee-ha!
SoCal, Neutral Bay

- Find them on Facebook: SoCal

Hot damn - there's a party a brewing and its over the bridge in a hot little bar called SoCal.
These guys really know how to make you sweat as though you were under the Californian sun, because they're bringing out the hot wings this year in the droves.
Feeling the burn? So Cal has a solution for that. This 4th of July its serving up buckets of Bud and picklebacks to help you wet your whistle and cool you down. Just in time to order that slice of pumpkin pie, too.
The Local Taphouse, Darlinghurst

- Find them on Facebook: The Local Taphouse

Beers, burgers and hotdogs. Sound like your thing, right? Then we suggest you get thee to The Local for some 4th of July grub and grog in its aptly titled All American SpecTAPular!
The beers today are craft and are 20 strong. All will be on tap including favourites from Founders Brewing Company, Sierra Nervada, Stone Brewing and Deschutes Brewery. The fodder will be (unsurprisingly) Americana, although what exactly is on the menu is hush-hush but what is on the dance floor will be you, dressed in your best 4th of July costume and throwing shapes to the live band. Don't deny it, you know it's true.

Sunday's another day and with it comes a Cornhole competition that's set to be both spectacular and a spectacle.

Still have no idea what we’re talking about? That’s okay. This pretty much sums it up:
