We've got good news for new American Express credit card customers. As of today, AMEX has reinstated the 100,000 bonus points offer on the American Express Explorer credit card. The bonus points are yours as long as you apply for the card and are approved by 15 May 2017 and spend $1,500 on eligible purchases within the first three months of card approval.
As well as the points, you’ll also receive a $400 travel voucher each year to spend on travel agent gift vouchers, accommodation, car hire and more through American Express Travel. And the rewards don’t end there. Cardholders will also continue to collect 2 Membership Rewards points per $1 spent on eligible purchases and 0.5 points per $1 spent on government purchases.
With your bonus Membership Rewards points you can receive credit to your account, either to cover the annual fee or to collect $740 worth of gift cards. Cardholders can also exchange their Membership Rewards points for frequent flyer points with Virgin Australia, Etihad Airways, Emirates and Air New Zealand. With an exchange rate of 2 Membership Rewards points for 1.5 frequent flyer points, you could collect 75,000 Velocity Points for 100,000 Membership Rewards points. This is enough points to redeem a premium economy flight with Virgin from Sydney to Los Angeles!
To maximise your points even further, you can also combine your 100,000 bonus points and $400 travel credit to redeem a $1,140 travel credit to use at the Membership Rewards store. As long as you meet the spending requirements, how you reward yourself with the points is up to you. While this card has offered 100,000 bonus points in the past, the most recent promotion only offered 50,000 Membership Rewards points for the same annual fee and spend requirement.
Like most reward credit cards, the American Express credit card offers a bounty of other travel perks. You’ll receive two complimentary passes to the American Express Lounge in Sydney International Airport T1 each year. Plus, as long as you meet the eligibility requirements, you can also save and travel with peace of mind thanks to complimentary international travel insurance.
The card comes at a price, though. It has a relatively high annual fee of $395 and an interest rate of 20.74% p.a. This card is best suited to frequent flyers and big spenders who can outweigh the cost of the card with their rewards, while also repaying their balance in full to avoid interest.
The American Express Explorer credit card currently offers the largest bonus points offer on the market, with the closest competitors being the American Express Platinum credit card, which also offers 100,000 bonus points, and the NAB Rewards Platinum Card, which offers 80,000 bonus points.
