10 Christmas movies you (probably) don’t know about
Spice up your Christmas watchlist with something other than Love Actually and Elf.
Everyone has a favourite holiday movie that they watch come December. Whether you like Christmas rom-coms, prefer some Christmas action flicks or would rather go for a classic, there's no shortage of choice out there. However, some festive titles tend to go unnoticed.
Maybe they're not what you would call traditional picks or perhaps they're so recent you haven't had a chance to check them out yet. Whatever the case, it's time they have their moment in the spotlight.
To liven up your streaming queue this year, here are 10 Christmas movies you (probably) don't know about. If you're looking for more festive cheer, check out our breakdown of all the Christmas shows and movies available to stream.
Cast: Anna Kendrick, Bill Hader, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Billy Eichner, Julie Hagerty
A charming Christmas tale, Noelle revolves around the titular character, who is Kris Kringle's daughter.
While she is full of Christmas spirit, she also wishes she could play a more prominent role during the celebration. That honour goes to her brother, who is set to take over all Christmas duties from his father ahead of the upcoming holiday.
The brother feels overwhelmed with the mounting pressure of the gig, so Noelle suggests he escapes the madness for a while. But when he fails to return, it's up to her to save Christmas. Silly and wholesome, the movie is guaranteed to brighten your day.
2. Black Christmas
Cast: Imogen Poots, Aleyse Shannon, Lily Donoghue, Brittany O'Grady, Cary Elwes
Black Christmas offers a modern take on the 70s slasher of the same name. While it doesn't quite meet the high bar set by the original, it's a spooky and bloody good time.
The plot follows a group of sorority sisters preyed upon by an unknown stalker during the holidays, when most students travel home to be with their loved ones. The girls have to band together and stand up to the psychotic killer.
Honestly, what's more festive than that? Let the bloodshed begin.
3. Anna and the Apocalypse
Cast: Ella Hunt, Malcolm Cumming, Sarah Swire, Christopher Leveaux, Marli Siu
Anna and the Apocalypse is set in a small town plagued by a zombie virus around Christmas. We follow a high school student as she and her friends sing and fight their way to survival, all while trying to reach their loved ones before it's too late.
Christmas and zombies go hand-in-hand in this captivating and quirky musical. It's just what you need if you're fed-up with run-of-the-mill tales about good deeds and family cheer.
4. The 12 Dogs of Christmas
Cast: Jordan-Claire Green, Tom Kemp, Susan Wood, Adam Hicks
Set during the Great Depression in a town where dogs are banned (blasphemy!), The 12 Dogs of Christmas centres on a young girl sent to live with relatives.
After she saves a small dog from a ruthless dog-catcher, the girl hatches a plan to use the school Christmas pageant to make the townspeople realise that the no-dog rule is insane.
The movie is overly sentimental and cheesy at times, but it's a treat for dog lovers of all ages. If you're looking for a festive title that isn't Home Alone to watch with the kids, you can't go wrong with this one.
5. Office Christmas Party
Cast: Jason Bateman, Olivia Munn, T.J. Miller, Jennifer Aniston
Are big laughs what you're after? Look no further than Office Christmas Party. This comedy will appeal to anyone who has ever had to sit through a tedious (and mandatory) holiday celebration at work.
When the big boss tries to close her brother's branch to cut costs, the brother throws an epic party to win over a potential client and save the day. The party soon gets completely out of hand.
With both humour and heart, the movie is highly entertaining from start to finish.
Cast: Jillian Bell, Isla Fisher, June Squibb, Jillian Shea Spaeder
Set at Christmas time, Godmothered follows Eleanor, an inexperienced fairy godmother-in-training who learns that her chosen profession is facing extinction.
To prove that the world still needs her kind, she finds an old letter from a young girl and decides to help. To her surprise, the girl is now a 40-year-old single mum who no longer believes in "happily ever after". Can Eleanor change her mind?
Godmothered is a modern fairytale with strong performances and sweetness galore. Stream it when you need a mood boost.
7. Happy Christmas
Cast: Joe Swanberg, Anna Kendrick, Melanie Lynskey, Mark Webber, Lena Dunham
Craving a bittersweet and low-key tale about family? Enter Happy Christmas, an indie production that benefits from having a wildly talented cast.
The movie centres on Jenny, an irresponsible 20-something who moves in with her brother's family to recover from a break-up. Her arrival not only upends their quiet life but also gives Jenny a chance to connect with her sister-in-law.
The movie has a naturalistic look to it, to the point where it resembles a warm, heartfelt embrace. It also features a cute baby that totally steals the show.
8. The Night Before
Cast: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anthony Mackie, Jillian Bell, Lizzy Caplan
Another great comedy worthy of your watchlist, The Night Before follows 3 best friends who always spend Christmas Eve together.
Since adulthood comes with challenges, the friends decide to attend 1 final party before putting their tradition to an end. As you might imagine, they're in for a crazy ride.
The movie is erratic and raunchy but ultimately hilarious. It will provide enough laughs to tide you over until New Year's Eve.
9. The Man Who Invented Christmas
Cast: Dan Stevens, Christopher Plummer, Jonathan Pryce
You're probably familiar with Charles Dickens' beloved tale, with A Christmas Carol enjoying a remake in 2019 with Guy Pierce. But have you ever wondered how he came up with such a timeless story? You're about to find out.
A biographical comedy-drama, The Man Who Invented Christmas zooms in on Dickens, a struggling writer during the time when he conceives the celebrated novella. Seeing him find real-life inspiration and rely on his imagination to overcome writer's block is nothing short of magical.
10. Christmas on the Farm
Cast: Poppy Montgomery, Darren McMullen, Nicholas Brown, Hugh Sheridan

The plot revolves around a New York socialite who fakes her identity to publish a book. However, the publisher wants to visit the home she lied about, so she is forced to return to her deceased mother's farm in Australia. Hijinks ensue.
